How To Make Deviled Eggs

In order for a journalist to write a good news story they must follow a certain process to create a good enough story to put out into the world.  A process that a journalist must go through to create a news story is similar to the steps involved in cooking and following a recipe.

How To Make Deviled Eggs:

Materials: Eggs, mayonnaise, yellow mustard, salt, pepper, paprika for garnishing, and cooking utensils

Step 1:  Hard boil the eggs

Step 2:  Crack the shell

Step 3:  Cut the eggs in half

Step 4:  Remove yolk

Step 5:  Mix in mayonnaise and the mustard

Step 6: Season with the salt and pepper

Step 7:  Pipe the filling into the egg whites

Step 8:  Sprinkle the paprika on top

Step 9: Enjoy!

A journalist must go through a certain number of things before finalizing a news story, just like following a recipe!

Story Idea From Twitter

While scrolling through Twitter I noticed that many people, including myself, have a never ending issue with registering for classes. Many students feel that there are not enough classes available in a semester for the large amount of students needing to take that class.  My idea for a news story would be to address this issue to every one who is at UNCC.  I think that this topic of interest would make for a good news story because it has relevance to the students and even the professors on our campus.

To gather more information about this issue I would find out who is in charge of how many courses are offered each semester and then I would find out how many professors are eligible to teach these classes.  I would ask questions as to why the courses that are required for the different majors are limited in number and times even when the school knows how many students have to take these classes before moving on requirements or before graduation.

I would do all my reporting at UNCC since that is where I will be most likely to find all of this information at.  Hopefully this story could help the students understand why registration and class schedules are the way they are.  I would hope that this news story would also encourage whoever is in charge of this subject at UNCC to make more classes available and hire more professors to teach these highly requested classes if that is what is needed to solve this problem at our school.

What is news?

There are many things that can be considered news.  News is anything from important information about a topic or event that can cause changes to your life.  News is also any event that creates issues in our society.  News can even be something as simple as where a celebrity spent their weekend.  News happens around us every day.

News provides the public with the information needed to make decisions concerning our lives.  News is also unexpected.  The main thing that makes something more news worthy than another is the level of importance.  A news story about a bombing or a spreading disease would have more precedence over a story about a local school going on a field trip.

There are different elements that make an event worthy of becoming news.  These elements are impact, timeliness, proximity, prominence, conflict, currency, the unusual, and even dogs.  Impact is newsworthy because it affects our lives and the society which we live in.  Timeliness is newsworthy because it talks about when things happen and what is happening now which are both fundamental important aspects of news.  Proximity is also important and worthy of being reported about because it reports on events that happen in local areas also known as geographical and emotional proximity.  Prominence is newsworthy when it comes to celebrities or people of power.  News that reports on crime, sports, politics, and business are all also major contributors to topics that you see on the news.  Stories of currency are important because they discuss trends and stories that are currently important.  The unusual are also newsworthy stories because people like to hear about weird news and things that the public may find entertaining.  Even dogs can be seen as newsworthy stories because most people find dogs cute and want to read about them.

Why does journalism matter?

In today’s culture, some may say that journalism is useless.  Certain people believe that journalism is irrelevant to our society and will eventually become nonexistent.  Some critics even go as far as to say that journalists should not be trusted.  However, journalism does matter and it serves an important purpose in our everyday lives whether we believe it or not.

Journalism is important on many different levels.  In today’s American society, we are fortunate enough to be able to report the facts about what is going on across the world and become knowledgeable about current events that we wouldn’t otherwise know about.  This knowledge is all thanks to journalism.  Other countries are not as lucky to have this right.  With journalism, individuals can gain insight and details involving news happening everywhere that they wouldn’t be able to find out themselves.

Journalists are responsible for getting this information out to the public.  Journalists give us trustworthy information by questioning institutions and exposing wrongs in order to help the public receive correct, unbiased information that ultimately helps us all.  Journalists will ask the questions that everyone wants to know and will use the power of the press to uncover the answers.  Journalism opens up a sense of community that helps solve problems in our world by pointing out the changes that need to be made in our society for better living.  Journalism changes the way we live by giving us the truth and the opportunity to take this information and improve our society for the better.
